What Causes Umbilical Hernia Surgery Scar Swelling, Pus And Redness?

Had a umbilical hernia op 2 weeks ago and the last few days have had redness develop and swelling along the scar line also a bit of pus like substance leaking onto the swab dressing. Went back to the medical centre today where they removed the dissolvable stitches as they thought it may be a reaction to them. Am home now, but some 6hours later it s looking more swollen than it was earlier. Never heard of allergy to stitches is it possible ?

Hello,

It sounds like you may have an infection of the surgical site.
Sometimes, the stitches can be a source of infection.
Is the pus still coming out? If it is, I would advise you to return to the hospital so that they can do a scan and see how much pus there is.
This can be an ultrasound or a CT of the abdomen.
If the scan comes back normal, then you can go home on antibiotics.

All the best.
