What Causes Urinary Retention In A Alzheimer S Patient?

Mother has Alzheimer s, fairly advanced. She is just 71. Today when visiting the nurse said her bladder is shutting down. They took her off meds for over active bladder, now she still isn t urinating. She seems to be in pain, tired and to me, looking like she is in the final stage of life. Please explain?
