What Causes Urinary Tract Infection ?

I was diagonised wit urinary tract infection and pus cells count was 80-100.I was advised to take extrum and pantomix along with citro soda. Doctor advised me to drink 3-4 litres of water.But whevener i drink water all the water gets drained by urine. Is this normal?
