Hi,I am Dr. Carol Rogala (Emergency Medicine). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am experiencing urine leakage when I am using a tampon. I have notices it for the past couple of months. It is usually worse at the beginning of my period. I am 33 and have never had children, but am actively trying to conceive. Is this something that I should be concerned about?
Some women may suffer from urinary leakage when they are using some certain period products like tampons. Intra abdominal pressure may be changed after inserting a tampon. The body's ability will also be changed and failed to adapt to the environment. It can be caused by either tight muscles which are unable to relax or unable to exert a strong contraction because it's always in a state of contraction. Again, it can be in a hypotonic state, which prevents the body creating a contraction.
If someone experiences urinary leakage only when using tampons, it can also be a sign of bladder prolapse. This type of prolapse can block the flow of urine and using tampon acts as a pessary to allow the proper flow of urine. So, if you experience increased urinary leakage when using a tampon, then you should consult your doctor promptly for medical help.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
The urinary leakage can be due to menstrual pains pushing the tampon on mouth of bladder. This might have caused bladder infection leading to the problem. Please get urine tested and start taking antibiotics advised by your gynecologist. Any infection or inflammation at cervix needs to be treated with few months break in use of tampon.
