Hi,
If you haven't had sex in a very long time, it is not unusual to have some chafing in the vagina or on the
cervix that can cause some vaginal bleeding. Your hymen is broken permanently when you lose your virginity, and it does not regrow. It is possible also that you began to bleed because your uterus was jostled during intercourse and you were just about to get your period.Very rarely, bleeding after sex can be a symptom of
cervical cancer or infection.
If you've not had a gynecologic evaluation and
PAP smear recently and you have a new sexual partner, I would suggest that you have a routine gynecologic examination to have cervical
cancer screening, and discuss
pregnancy prevention if this is an issue for you. However, given the fact that your bleeding stopped, it is extremely unlikely that it was caused by anything pathologic.
So in summary, to be safe I recommend getting a gynecologic examination, but a small amount a vaginal bleeding is very common in women who have not had intercourse for long period of time.
I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today, and that my advice was helpful.
Best wishes,
Dr. Brown
