Hi, I ve just taken a 500mg dose of Amoxicillin for a chest infection. I am 53 years old, and for the first time in four years of postmenopause I have a bleed. Its rather odd as I am not sexually active at present. However, I was wondering if the hefty dose of antibiotics could have caused this?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, I understand your concern. Yes, amoxicillin 500 mg is likely to cause vaginal bleeding. You should consult your treating doctor for stopping the drug & replacement by another antibiotic. I=Vaginal bleeding is not supposed to be normal after 4 years of menopause. So, though you have history of taking high dose amoxicillin, I would advise for a gynecological ckeck up along with intravaginal USG of genitals to exclude any other element causing it. Thanks.
