What Causes Vaginal Discharge Of Blood Mixed With Other Color Variations?
I am 61 yrs old post menopausable. Went for my annual gyno exam. Dr. saw a spot on cervix which he said bled a little so he used a silver nitrate stick on it. I had told him that prior to my appt. I had noticed a small amount of watery blood on toilet paper one morning before my appt. he felt that it was possible that the spot he treated had caused the blood. Will let me know what Pap results are in a few days. The treatment has caused a vaginal discharge of blood mixed with other color variations. It has lasted for about four days now. After exercising today it seemed to bleed a little more than the usual amount. He did tell me also if I had any bright red blood appear to let him know and he would order an ultrasound. Not sure if I should insist on ultrasound no matter what. I am 5 feet 5 inche's and weigh 138.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, I understand your concern. Any vaginal discharge after menopause is a thing to be taken care of immediately. The most common cause being weakening/ atrophy of vaginal lining because it no more gets hormone estrogen after menopause. The dry & weak vaginal lining easily gets infected. Treatment is in form of hormone replacement & antibiotics as per need. Pap smear is already taken . It is for exclusion/detection of malignancy. You can ask for USG scan-- it will exclude any other pathology in uterus/ pelvis. It will help you in two ways..detection/ exclusion of any other cause for your problem/ psychological satisfaction. Thanks.
