Hi there,
It is quite common for antibiotics to cause some stomach issues, which is why we usually advise you to take it with food to reduce the effects. However, if it is still bad enough to distress you then yes, by all means, have it changed. Clarinova, or
clarithromycin, is quite a broad spectrum antibiotic, and is not commonly prescribed for
acne. Have you tried more targeted ones like doxycycline? I usually start off with doxycycline 100mg twice a day, to be tapered down when it improves.
Make sure you do the topical creams as well, like
benzoyl peroxide,
adapalene or
tretinoin. This is because acne usually needs long term maintenance therapy, and often comes back again once treatment is stopped. Once the antibiotic controls the breakouts, continue with the creams long-term to try and reduce the need for antibiotics.
Explain to your doctor about the side effects that you are feeling, because you will need a new prescription from her if you want to change the antibiotics. There are other options available, you shouldn't have to endure side effects of medication if you don't have to.
Hope this helps, and all the best to you.
Regards,
Dr. Teh
