What Causes Vomiting, Bowel Problems, Weight Loss And Eating Disorder In Elderly?
Hello Doctor Since few weeks ( Last two weeks) my father aged 73 has been vomiting and having bowels problems. He has lost weight and hardly eats.we took him to a doctor(general physcian) and the doctor said that he had become anemic and asked to perform a master health check up and supected that there could be an issue with the liver.I wanted to check if there is anything serious with the liver condition. We had also performed a Ultra sound which was normal. The liver function test results are as follows: LIVER FUNCTION Test (23/07/2014) Test Result Biological Reference Interval Units Method BILIRUBIN Bilirubin Total 1.47 H Adult: 0.2 - 1.0 mg/dL Jendrassik & Graff Direct Reacting Bilirubin 0.40 H less than 0.2 mg/dL Diazotization Indirect Bilirubin 1.07 H Adult: 0 - 0.8 mg/dL Calculated GOT (AST) 90 H 15 - 37 U/L IFCC with P5P GPT (ALT) 43 30 - 65 U/L IFCC with P5P GGTP (gamma-GT) 17 Male : Up to 85 U/L IFCC Alkaline Phosphatase 48 L Adult: 50 - 136 IU/L PNPP AMP PROTEINS Total Proteins 6.6 6.4 - 8.2 g/dL Biuret Albumin 3.8 3.4 - 5.0 g/dL BCP Globulin 2.8 1.9 - 3.5 g/dL Calculated A/G Ratio 1.3 Calculated Reggards, Ajay
Some of the liver tests are mildly abnormal and could be due to a number of conditions. The association of anemia with weight loss suggests a serious underlying problem that needs further evaluation. Your doctor is right in performing a master workup. I presume s/he will be doing further testing. Your father could be having gallbladder disease, bowel inflammation or infection, pancreatitis (although this is usually quite painful and you don't mention pain), a blocked bowel, or even cancer. He should continue to have testing until a definite cause is identified and treated. Hope this helps.
