What Causes Vomiting, Nausea, Elevated Blood Pressure And Abdominal Pain?

My 86 year old mother was admitted to the hospital yesterday through the ER after experiencing vomiting, nausea, elevated blood pressure, and abdominal pains. Tests show gallstones. We are concerned about her undergoing surgery and general anesthesia due to her age and previous history of hypertension, copd, and paroximal a-fib. are there non-surgical alternatiives we can look at? Her doctor recommended surgery.

Greetings from Dr.Divakara.P
Thanks for posting your query.

There is no non surgical alternative for gallstones . Her age is not a contraindication for surgery but a history of COPD and paroxysmal AF puts her into high risk category.

If you are really very anxious about surgery what alternative you can do is to wait and watch. I mean to say presence of gallstones is not a big issue , even if it is not removed it won't cause any major problems except Abdominal pain which may or may not come frequently.

If her abdominal pain and vomiting can be controlled by the medicines and the frequency of Pain and vomiting is less then you can just keep avoiding the surgery .

But if her pain is not controllable with medicines or if the frequency of pain attacks are more requiring frequent hospital admissions then you better get the surgery done for her.

Hope this information is useful to you.
Any clarification feel free to ask.
