What Causes Weakness And Joint Pain When Diagnosed With Hashimoto S Encephalopathy?
Hi Doctor, My mother has recently been diagnosed with Hashimoto encephalopathy, her antithyroid antibodies level are more than 4000. she is facing issues like heavy weakness, joint pain etc. Dr has prescribed her wysolone 30 mg since last 30 days. But as of now there is not much improvement in her condition specially weakness is it right treatment she is undergoing? how long it take to get fully normal antithyroid antibodies? Regards nilesh
Hashimoto encephalopathy usually responds to the short-term steroid. Significant clinical improvement may take average four to six weeks( then slowly tapered over weeks).
Most patients stay in remission even after discontinuation of treatment. But treatment may be required lifelong.
Periodic intravenous immune globulin and plasma exchange are other therapeutic options. Antithyroid antibody titers do not correlate well with disease severity and may not return to normal.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
