What Causes Weakness In The Arms And Hands While On Amlodipine And Simvastatin?

i have taken simvistation 20mg and 10mg amlodipine, for over 15 years. I have had wreaking and muscle pain frequent for the last few years primarily in the back shoulders and arms. I question my doctor in the past few years he said that would ve been early on when I started taking the medicine however just last month he said will probably have to change it to something like Crestor. I m concerned about the weakness in my hands arms could the combination of these two medicines be causing this? And would it have a possible leave affecting heart muscle?

Hello!

Welcome on HCM!

I passed carefully through your concern and would like to explain that your recent symptomatology seems to be related to potential adverse effects of Simvastatin, mialgia and myopathy is not rarely found in patients under treatment with statins.

These unwanted effects may potentially happen with every statins (even Crestor) and is not influenced by Amlodipin use.

Coming to this point, it is advisable immediately stopping the drug (Simvastatin) and performing certain laboratory test to confirm muscle involvement:

- CPK,
- AST & ALT,
- LDH,
- PCR

and discuss with your doctor on alternative strategies to properly control your blood lipid levels.

Hope to have been helpful to you!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri

Hello,
This is most likely due to cervical spine problem rather than medicine, due to compression of nerves between spine.
Does this pain increases on neck movement, or any neck trauma, these may be the associated symptoms.
You should get x cervical spine AP/ Lat view and further may need MRI.
You need to visit physiotherapist after x ray and also orthopaedician. Till the time he can have tab neurobion forte once a day which is a nerve vitamin. If this is not helpful then you need to Tab Pregabalin 75 mg bedtime, which is a nerve stabilizer.
Hope this helps you and get back if you have any doubts.
