What Causes Weight Gain And Edema In Lower Extremities In Alzheimers Patient?

My father has alzheimers and had been losing 2-4 pounds per month since march. In the past week he has gained 18 pounds and has no history of congestive heart failure. He has minimal edema to his lower extremities. He is urinating without problem. I reported to the hospice nurse. What might be going on?

HI
Thanks for posting to HealthcareMagic.

Actually it is less likely for Alzheimer's patient to gain weight . Weight gain could be due to Physical Inactivity, New onset of Diabetes or could be due to side effects of medicines he is on for Alzheimer's.

I advise you to mobilize him more , make him walk more , get him tested for Diabetes . Also let me know what medications he is taking .

Hope you find this information useful.
Any clarifications feel free to ask .
