What Causes Weight Gain While On Lamictal And Valproic Acid?
hi. i ve had seizures for probably 15yrs now. most of my life i ve been on depakot. The longer i was on depakot i started to experiance weight gain. my dr took me off saying it was an old drug and it is hard on my liver...so she put me on lamictal once i started lamictal i lost quite a bit of weight i had a seizure when i was on the lamictal so she proscribed valproic acid along with my lamictal...as soon as is started taking the valproic acid with the lamictal i gained a TON of weight back. what is the deal? can i possibly be taken off the valpoic acid or is it a factor in my weight gain?
Hi Thanks for posting your query on HCM. I really appreciate your concern for the weight gain while taking medications for your seizures.
Debakote and Valproic acid belong to the same group of drugs used in the treatment of seizures and hence weight gain (due to accumulation of fluid in the body tissues) is one of the recognized side effects.
Consult your treating doctor/neurologist for this side effect, the alternate use of drugs like Phenytoin or Carbamazepine which do not cause weight gain can be thought of.
Hope this answers your query.
