What Causes White, swollen And Painful Bumps At The Side Of Tongue During Periods?

Every month around my menstration or any time I get sick, I get white swollen and painful bumps on the side of my tongue. This month, it has gotten so bad that I can t talk correctly and am in an unusually amount of pain (not serious but it s more than average). What are the cause of these bumps and what do I do to help other than taking anti-inflammatory meds? Are they a result in hormone fluctuations? An autoimmune response maybe? I d like your insight.

Hi,

Yes, fluctuations in hormonal levels due to menstruation, menopause or sickness can cause the symptoms you are describing. You can use these simple tips to control such symptoms:

- Do brush your teeth twice a day and use fluoride containing toothpaste.
- Floss your teeth at least once a day.
- Eat well balanced diet.
- Avoid sugar and starch containing diet.
- Include use of Chlorhexidine mouthwash in your routine oral care. Use this mouthwash after meals. Take about 10 ml of liquid, squish around mouth for about 30 seconds and then spit it. Do not take water or food for 30 seconds after mouthwash use.
- Drink lots of fluids and do not keep mouth dry for long time.

If these applications do not help, consult a dentist when you have these lesions next time and go for a specific diagnosis.

I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. Take care.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
