What Causes Worsening Of The Asthma After Nebulization?

Hi doctor, my son came from school yesterday complaining of sore throat, this triggered his asthma. My wife took him to the doctor this morning and gave some anibiotcs to take for ten days and asked us to use the neubilizer every four hours, he also asked to see him in 48 hours. The issue is that his asthma seem to have gotten worse and we have been giving him the neubilizer every two hours or less. Should I be concerned and take him to the emergency room or just keep doing what I have been doing and wait til his doctor sees him on Thursday.

Thanks

Hello.

Thank you for asking at HCM.

I went through your history and would like to make suggestions for you as follows:

1. First of all, with proper treatment including nebulization, asthma should improve and of course should not worsen.

However, I would think of some causes why asthma may have worsened:

a. Basically the episode of asthma may have progressed it self. It is a know fact that all the asthma medicines can only control symptoms, not "cure" it. So it is possible that due to progress of episode, medications may be not enough to control symptoms.

b. Sometimes, nebulization with salbutamol/levosalbutamol, especially if given without oxygen, can cause paradoxical bronchospasm and can cause worsening of asthma symptoms.

c. Sometimes, there may be problem with instrument or procedure of nebulization and it may be possible that your son is not actually receiving adequate amounts of desired drugs.

Whatever the cause may be, I would suggest you to consult your doctor as it is unusual to have no response to proper nebulization in an asthma episode.

Hope above information will be helpful to you.

Should you have any further query, please feel free to ask at HCM.

Wish your son a very good recovery and the best of the health ahead.

Thank you & Regards.
