What Causes Yeast Infection?

I had a pap done last month and my doctor called saying I had a yeast infection my boyfriend chews tobacco and also smokes on occasion. Could this have caused my yeast infection? I also noticed my tongue feeling rough and hurting does that mean I have a yeast infection in my mouth?
