What Causes Yellow Discoloration Of The Skin Despite Taking Phototherapy?
Our 7 day old was born at 36 and 6. He has already had phototherapy at the hospital. Released us at a 10. 24 hours later was a 14. 36 hours later an 18. They said he doesn t need phototherapy again until it reaches a 22. He was checked yesterday at an 18. They said to come in Monday to check. He looks more yellow and we are worried because it keeps climbing, not regressing. Should we take him to the hospital?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Yellow discoloration of the baby's skin after birth is very common. It is called newborn jaundice which is very common and can occur when babies have a high level of bilirubin, a yellow pigment produced during normal breakdown of red blood cells. The good news is that in most cases, newborn jaundice goes away on its own as a baby’s liver develops and as the baby begins to feed, which helps bilirubin pass through the body. In most cases the yellow discoloration / jaundice will disappear in 2 to 3 weeks. Feeding the baby and exposure to sunlight always helps in the same.
