Hi my 9 tyear old autistic son has a lump on the right hand side of his neck. Joshua normaly gets raised glands when he has a cold but he is perfectly well and has no symptoms of being unwell. The nurse saw him yesterday and she was concerned enough to book him an emergency appointment for tomorrow but she kept repeatedly asking me if Joshua had any cold symptoms and I said no she said his throat was clear his ears were clear he seemed fine. Joshua became distressed about it because it is annoying him it does not hurt him when you touch it but he says it makes he throat feel watery and that he can feel it when he drinks and eats we are very concerned what do you think it could be? any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated.
Lumps in neck are most commonly from lymph node enlargement. This is very common in children from inter-current infections, and we need not worry. We need to evaluate when this is >1cm in diameter, is progressively enlarging or is tender to touch, or associated fever/weight loss. Otherwise we need not worry.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
