What Could Be The Cause Of A Bruise On Calf That Does Not Change Color And Diminish In Size?
My daughter has a bruise on her calf. It is about the same area as a dollar bill. It appeared last week and we thought it was due to a collision with her sister while playing outside. She doesn t complain of any pain and can walk, run, jump, apply weight on her leg, without pain. It is slightly sensitive to the touch in the localized area. It hasn t changed size in a week but the color changes from red and slightly swollen at night to purplish and not swollen during the day. It is not itchy and we do not see a speck or center point that would indicate an insect or spider bite. These symptoms haven t changed in 7 days now and we would have expected a bruise to change colors and diminish in size. Any idea what it could be?
Any history of insect bite preceding this? Is the lesion itchy? Also kindly have a through inspection to look for any lesion elsewhere in the body. If single, this may be manifestation of an unnoticed insect bite (usually have some itching) or a superficial contusion/bruise following trivial trauma as you suspected. In case there are lesions in other parts too, we have to get a blood count done to rule out ITP (idiopathic thrombocytopenia).
If it is single, and not disturbing, just wait for 1 more week to disappear. Hot bath can hasten recovery. Also, give her diet rich in vitamin C like orange, lime and green leafy vegetables. Vitamin c deficiency can cause bleeding gums while brushing and easy bruising with even minor trauma.
