What Could Be The Cause Of Heavy Bleeding And Clotting?

Last month for about 3 weeks I experienced very heavy bleeding (soaking 2 tampons and super pads per hour) and clotting (quarter sized)during my irregular menstrual cycle. This was preceded by dark spotting from the clitoris area. I stopped bleeding about 2 weeks ago, but began spotting from clitoris area today and minimal bleeding also appeared when I wore a tampon. I am 49-not pregnant-regularly sexually active. What could this be?

Hi. Heavy bleeding at this age may be due to some fibroid uterus, or abnormal uterine bleeding where cause is to be ascertained , (polyp, endometrial hyperplasia). Yes, one more thing, spotting or bleeding from clitoris can be due to trauma also. So consult your dr. , get a local ex. done and also one scan to see the cause and treat accordingly.
Thanks.
