What Could Be The Cause Of Vomiting Black Liquid?

hey, my grandmother has just passed away suddenly, she went to hospital and took some tests - they said her stomach was full of excrement, they gave her medicine and sent her home, saying it will take time for it to fluh through. She stayed in bed during the day but was in large amounts of discomfort, even before when she left the hospital, she could barely walk. In the night she began throwing up black liquid in excessive amounts. Eventually she calmed down and went to bed on her side. In the morning she was dead. Can you explain exactly what she may have had?
