Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Son fell over team mate playing basketball last week. Didn't tell us until the next day that it hurt him. He is 10 Years old 150# and 5'5. Slammed knee on court. Played three games on Saturday, just 5-6 minutes in each and said that it hurts to run. the knee does feel better after ice is applied and he can walk with out pain. Is there a chance of ligament damage? Should he still be able to walk if there is major damage?
The most common injury to the knee while playing basketball is due to twisting of the knee which causes IDK ( internal derangement of the knee ) which may include ligament and meniscal injuries.
But in this case , since the knee slammed onto the court, it was a direct impact which is unlikely to cause ligament injury. It is probably contusion of the knee which should be better with complete rest fot atleast 10 days. During this period the treatment should be ice packs , anti inflammatory drugs, long leg knee brace to be applied. If the pain does not come down by atleast 50 % after these 10 days, an MRI scan is indicated to rule out ligament injury.
