What Could Be The Reason For Chest Pain?

Hi I am a 20 year old female and will be turning 21 in just a couple of months. I have for the last probably 3 years of my life had pain in my chest on more towards the center/left side. This is shooting pain that will shot up towards my left collar bone as well. At times it prevents me from being able to take deep breaths , though I feel that is the only way to get rid of it. What brought me here today, however, is that fact that while sitting at my desk at work, with the blinds open, a bird flew right up to my window. When it did I was startled to say the least and directly after the shock/scare the pain started happening again. I m almost 100% positive that as a very small child I was diagnosed with a slight heart murmur (spelling) but I ve always been told since I hit about 8-9 and on that I grew out of it ... What in the world could this be? It really does scare me!

Hi ,
You could be having a cardiac cause of chest pain or gastritis/GERD or it could be due to anxiety. One possibility is a cardiac condition as you have had a murmur in your childhood. But since your doctor has evaluated you and said 'you grew out of it' probably it can be ruled out. Another possibility is that since you knew you had a cardiac murmur in your childhood, you psychologically feel that you have a heart condition and probably that is why you feel that the pain is there.Yet another possibility is heartburn due to acidity like GERD/gastritis.
There are many other causes of chest pain. Please visit a cardiologist for a thorough cardiac work up and if everything is normal , don't worry any more. Probably all it requires is some antacids/proton pump inhibitors, if the problem is due to acidity. Or some counselling if it is due to anxiety.
Hope you feel better soon :)
