What Could Be The Reason For Frequent Urination Of A Diabetic Person Aged 90?

My husband is 90 yrs. old and is urinating almost every hour for the last 4 hours. He is diabetic. His number right after lunch was 357. He has been very confused the last 18 hours and not sleeping well last evening right after the confusion started. Is he dehydrated? or is it something else?

Diabetologist 's  Response
Hi, welcome to our site. I am Dr Saumya Mittal.

Read your query. That is a very significant question and i appreciate your problem. I will try my best to answer your query

There are many aspects in this query
1. He may have frequency of micturition because of high sugars that are reported. Polyuria and polydypsia are the most frequent symptoms of diabetes, especially uncontrolled

2. The excess urination- polyuria- may be due to the possibility if urinary tract infection. These are common in diabetics, especially if uncontrolled.

3. At his age, he might have prostate issues and therefore may have frequency of urination because of that.

As for the altered sensorium- confusion- this might be due to high sugars or other metabolic disorders associated with high sugars.

This may also be due to the infection that he may have like uti. Is called septic encephalopathy.

At his age getting drowsy and confused is not a good sign and I would definitely suggest going to an emergency as soon as possible.

And you need to get his sugars controlled as soon as possible, preferably using insulin

I hope this helps you. Inform the reports mentioned above so i can be of help further. Best of luck.
