What Could Be The Reason For Having A Painful Knot At The Back Of My Head?

Hi, the back of my mother's (50 yr old in good shape) head started hurting her and she discovered a painful to the touch knot there, right where the skull bone goes into the neck. She hasn't fell or had any injury around that area. Do you know what it could be??
