What Could Be The Reason For Indentation In Calf Muscle ?

I am 50 and lead a fairly active lifestyle. 2 1/5 months ago a fell on stairs and tore muscles in my right calf. My foot had discoloration from blood pooling and my calf swelled a lot. Dr said torn muscles and to do RICE and stay off of it. About a month ago it stopped getting better and I have a verticle indent in the calf muscle about 5 inches long. Dr now thinks I may have torn a tendon and has ordered an MRI . I can t find any info on torn tendons in the upper calf. If I walk to much or lift anything the next day it is extremely sore . I am unsure what to do in terms of staying off of it altogether, exercise, ice, or anything. Should I use crutches, cain, stay of it, what?

hello,
A tendon is the fibrous tissue that attaches muscle to bone in the human body. The forces applied to a tendon may be more than 5 times your body weight. In some rare instances, tendons can snap or rupture. Conditions that make a rupture more likely include the injection of steroids into a tendon, certain diseases (such as gout or hyperparathyroidism), and having type O blood.

Although fairly uncommon, a tendon rupture can be a serious problem and may result in excruciating pain and permanent disability if untreated. Each type of tendon rupture has its own signs and symptoms and can be treated either surgically or medically depending on the severity of the rupture

vertical indent in your calf muscle is due to the trauma you had couple of months back.

torn tendon in the upper calf is rare but can happen. an mri would definitely help not only to assess a torn tendon also the soft tissue and the joint to rule out any associated injury.

avoid waking too much. avoid bearing weight on the injured leg. using a clutch can be helpful no doubt. avoid anything that puts too much work on your leg.

i hope i have answered your query.

take care
