Hi, I started seeing a red mark on the side of my lips about a week ago. I applied hot water on my lips, but it swelled up even bigger. Its tender to touch, no white puss or any blisters, it s really red. When I touch it, it s painful and it feels like there s a ball inside of the swelling. Can you please tell me what it could be?
I can understand your concern. From the description of your problem, it seems that you have developed a bacterial infection and abscess inside the lip. Increased swelling when heat is applied is a cardinal sign of presence of an abscess. Please refrain from applying any more heat to the area.
I would recommend you to visit a dermatologist or a dentist as the abscess may need to be drained of pus. Pus may not be draining now but might be present in the abscess. After drainage, you might need to take a course of antibiotics.
If you are in pain due to infection right now, taking Ibuprofen 400 mg will help to relieve the pain. You can take this medicine up to three times a day until you get an appointment of the specialist.
I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish you feel better soon.
Best, Dr. Viraj Shah
