What Could Blood In Stools Indicate?

Hi, my boyfriend has had blood in his stool for 4 years at least. He's finally decided to get checked out but wanted some information before going to a doctor. He assumes cancer, because he just assumes the worst. and i dont want to confirm that because every web site i go to does. If you have ANY other, simpilar, explantation, it would be GREATLY appreciated! Please help, any information would be great. Thank you.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per my surgical experience, there are many reasons for blood in stools such as hemorrhoid, fissure, inflammatory bowel conditions, cancer, and others.

I recommend a systemic approach in terms of physical examination of Proctoscopy, lab tests and colonoscopy to evaluate the root and get cured accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
