What Could Cause Bruises In Shin ?

I took a knee to the shin about a week ago playing basketball. It swelled up and over the last few days the swelling has decreased. Now there is white and purple sploches appearing. I would guess its bruising I've just never seen a bruise like this before. Should I be concerned?
