What Could Cause Missed Periods While Being On Depakote?
Hi. I am a 15 year old girl & I am concerned about something. I have been taking Depakote 3 times a day, I dont know what the dose is, but I havent got my period like in a month. Also i went yesturday March 1 to get blood test so Im scared that something is wrong with me. I dont know what to do or expect.
Menstrual irregularity is a common side effect of Depakote. it doesn't mean that there's anything wrong with you or with the medication. If you periods continue to be abnormal you may need to take something to regulate your cycles. That's okay. What's important is that Depakote is working well to treat your neurological disorder. Many neurologic medications can affect menstrual regulation. It has to do with dopamine and prolactin parhways. if this is a source of distress for you be sure to talk to your neurologist. A low-dose birth control pill will make your menses very regular predictable and prevents cramps. It also makes your skin and hair quite nice. in my practice I had many teenage athletes who were so slender that they did not menstruate regularly. They usually do very well on low dose pills or a monthly disposable vaginal ring..
