What Could Cause Severe Vaginal Itching And Burning Sensation?

I am 76, female, and haven t had sex for 37 years, yet I now have a severe vaginal itch, which burns and itches at the same time. When I go to the bathroom it burns like crazy. This has been going on for 4 days now. I have used baking soda and a medical ointment to no avail. What could have caused this?

Hello,
Your symptoms suggest some urethritis and vaginitis and this can happen without any sexual contact. Owing to your age, you will have reduced thickness of the lining membranes of the vagina and the urethra and this can give rise to infections at the slightest instance. You need to see a specialist and get a vaginal swab and a pap smear and also urinalysis for proper treatment. Please do not self-medicate as resistance can occur with incomplete treatment. Please maintain genital hygiene and take vitamin and mineral supplements. Hope this helps.
