Sudden memory loss commonly occurs due to imbalance in sodium-potassium level due to lack of proper nutrition or dehydration. However, it may be caused due to underlying medical condition that is not diagnosed like dementia or Alzheimer's disease. It can also occur due to fatigue, stress (emotional or physical), lack of sleep, side effects of certain medications being taken.
Sudden memory loss is treatable. You are advised to get your mother hospitalized and clinically examined and evaluated by a GP. She will be ordered required blood tests to be done along with imaging tests if needed so that the treatment can be started at the earliest.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
