What Could Cause Sudden, Severe, Painful Cramp In Inner Thigh Radiating To Knee And Buttock?

I had the the most painful cramp ever in my inner thigh which radiated to my knee and up to my buttock and it lasted more than 10-15 minutes. I was sitting in a chair when it began..Is there something I can do to prevent it happening again ? I walked on cold tiles barefooted and wrapped a cold cloth around the area. Nothing helped.
