What Could Cause Swollen, Inflammed And Painful Lips Cracked At The Corners?

Thank you! I woke up yesterday morning and my lips were very swollen and inflamed. They are cracked at the corners and the lips are very painful. It is difficult to eat or talk. I have not eaten anything different nor used any different makeup or lip stick so I do not think it is an allergic reaction to anything. The condition, while it hasn t seemed to get worse, is definitely not improving. Could you give me a any clues as to what is causing this? I am 61 years old, female, and I am in excellent health. I take no prescription medications, only daily vitamins.

Hello Dear,

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of swollen, inflamed and painful lips cracked at the corners which could be due to simple chapping of lips, lip licking, infection, allergic reaction and autoimmune disease.

Need not to worry. I would suggest you to to apply lip balm with SPF factor 15 and keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Suck on ice pops. Immediately stop licking and picking of your lips. Take vitamin B2 and niacin supplement. If condition persist even after doing above treatment then consult oral pathologist for proper examination and to rule out conditions. Doctor may start treatment accordingly and take antihistamine medications to prevent allergy.
