What Could Cause Tingling Sensation And Numbness In The Toes?

I started experiencing tingling and numbness in my toes on both feet. I had a complete physical scheduled in a few weeks but the tingling and numbness became worse and spread to my calves and even in my upper legs. I went to the doctor before the physical and spoke to the doctor. He told me that the possible causes were diabetes, neuropathy, lower back problems or a vitamin B 12 deficiency .The doctor went ahead with the blood work and I was to return in a couple of weeks for the results. So I had a friend who is a diabetic check my blood sugar and it was normal. I went to the store and purchased a B12 / B complex and started taking it daily. Within about 7 days the symptoms subsided. When I went back to my doctor for the results I was shocked to find that my B12 levels were not low but high at 1800. The doctor took more blood and called me back two days later to tell me that my B12 levels were now over 2000 and to quit taking the supplement. However, He never explained why my levels were so high to begin with. I have cut back on the B12 and am now experiencing some numbness again in my toes. I am also having trouble sleeping. I go to sleep right away but wake up about two hours later with restlessness in my legs and my whole body. I usually just get up and go down stairs and watch TV for a while and then the pain will subside and I can go back to sleep. What could be causing these symptoms?

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You have ruled two causes diabetic neuropathy and vitamin B12 deficiency. then most likely cause is lumbar canal stenosis (LCS).LCS means reduced space in spinal for nerves with decrease in blood supply and hence when you stand or walk tingling and numbness appears. Diagnosis can be confirmed by doing MRI of the lumbo sacral spine with screening of whole spine. Please get it done from radiology centre nearby you. Meanwhile start tab Pregalin x 75 mg one at bedtime. You need to visit orthopedic surgeon with report. Increase in vitamin B12 level in your blood may be due to increased intake.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
