What Could Intense Abdominal Burning Sensation With Accompanied Pain In The Back, Waist And Gluteal Region, Dizziness And Legs Heaviness Be Indicative Of?

Hi. Ever since I was diagnosed of peptic ulcer last year my body never remained the same. I have been to 3 different hospitals here in Nigeria in which one is the teaching hospital where I am studying Physiotherapy. First, it was intense burning sensation on the stomach with accompanied pain both on the back, waist and gluteal region. Next was burning sensation on the chest and chest pain and tightness that extends to shoulder and neck; dizziness and burning sensation on the head; heaviness on the legs more especially on the left leg; lost of body weight from 57 kg to 50 kg; OAB (Overactive Bladder) and frequently urinate more especially during the night; taking of too much water; bloating and difficulty in breathing. At the outset when the diagnosis was made my BP used to be 145/90mmHg. Now it is in between 120 to 130mm.Hg. I have done ECG to see if there is any problem with my heart, yet the result was negative. I have done x-ray which have shown that my chest, liver, kidneys, bladder, prostrate, etc, are also normal and in good shape. I have done full blood count and all the parameters have indicated normalcy. I have done fecal occult blood test and the result came out negative. Yet after all my stay in these 3 different hospitals, the symptoms remain the same. And I was wondering if it is this peptic ulcer or am I not diagnosed right? Apart from the x-ray, what other test can I do to check the health of my vital organs like kidney and heart? What other medical advice can you give me so as to be free from this issue, doc. It s too much on me and has drastically affected my academics.

Hello,

You have to be very careful with your diet as your discomfort is also spread to your back, waist, gluteal area. Take food that does not trigger gas. Avoid taking any food or drink that makes your symptoms worse. You are suggested to take well-cooked boiled food for a couple of months. Boiled food will help to heal the ulcer. Take balanced diet that is high in fiber. Do not take oily, spicy food.

Avoid taking food that causes constipation like red meat, full fat dairy products, gluten containing food, alcohol, processed grains, fried food, fast food, etc. Constipation causes gas formation and hence abdominal burning. Take laxatives, suppositories and food like papayas that will help better bowel movement. Take adequate quantity of water and fluids so that there is no constipation.

You can take antacids & PPIs; it will help to reduce stomach acid production. You can take liver tonics and digestive enzyme capsules for better digestion and absorption. Get liver function tests done to rule out any developing liver dysfunction. Leg heaviness occurs commonly due to water retention & sedentary type of lifestyle.

Cut on salty snacks & avoid sedentary lifestyle. Do regular walking and exercises. Get clinically examined to rule out varicose veins, blood clots, poor circulation, etc. If obese, lose weight. You can get routine cardiac tests and kidney tests done to rule out any underlying disease. Your treatment will depend on the pathology detected. Stay away from addictions if any like alcohol, drugs, smoking, etc.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
