What Could Spotting While Taking Loestring Birth Control Pills Indicate?

I started taking Loestrin24Fe birth control in August 2010 for painful cramps. In April/May 2011, I started taking it continuously so that I don't have a period at all. Eight days ago, I started having some spotting and it hasn't gone away since. I don't know if I should have my period this month or wait until the spotting stops.

Hello,

You are on Loestring birth control pills continuously for painful cramps, presently you are having spotting. It is not unlikely not to get periods when on Loestring. If sexually active and not getting periods then it is difficult to tell if you are pregnant or not. You are suggested to use condoms even when you are on birth control pills because it does not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases.

Loestring Fe may cause irregular periods due to hormonal imbalances. Scanty periods or spotting. Spotting may be a sign of implantation bleeding. If you miss periods for two or more months, or if you miss your period after a month where you did not take all your pills correctly and were sexually active you should get clinically examined by an OBGYN.

Your Gynae may want you to get urine test for pregnancy done or have USG (Uterus with fallopian tubes done) to detect pregnancy / ectopic pregnancy. Stop taking Lo Loestring Fe if you are pregnant. You will be accordingly managed even if you are not pregnant. Stay away from addictions if any. If you miss two or more pills, you may not have a period during the month. If you miss a period for two months in a row, call your doctor because you might be pregnant.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
