What Could Weight Loss, Increased Appetite And High Fasting Sugar Indicate?

hi,

My husband got his blood sugar checked in one of the camp held in his office and found that it is 210 before having breakfast. Should we consult a doctor. He has also lost his weight from last 7 months. He also says he feels more hungry. I am really worried as he is just 34 years. Please suggest me what has to be done. I am confused and worried.

Thank you for the query.
As per the information provided, your husband is 34yrs old with a history of weight loss over 7 months, increased appetite and fasting blood sugar level of 210mg%. These symptoms are suggestive of Diabetes mellitus.
You need to do some more investigations, before arriving to a conclusion. Diabetes mellitus can be diagnosed by the following:
Fasting blood sugar level more than or equal to 126mg%
2hrs Post Prandial blood sugar more than equal to 200mg%
HbAic level more than equal to 6.5% (HbAic is a indicator of the blood sugar status over the past 3months)
If there are symptoms of infection (like urinary tract infection), these may favor the diagnosis of Diabetes mellitus.
Diabetes mellitus can develop at any age. If detected early, it can be controlled to prevent long term complications (like retinopathy, neuropathy, nephropathy, cardiovascular disease).
Please consult your physician for blood investigations (to confirm the diagnosis) and a plan of management can be set up. Dietary modifications and exercise regimen may help control blood sugar in the initial phases. Whether, he requires medications at this phase, can be decided after assessing his blood sugar profile.
Hope this helps you.
