What Diet Should Be Followed By A Borderline Diabetic?

Hi, my dad is borderline diabetes and has been told to stick to a regular diet to avoid becoming a diabetic. The problem is he is eating the same foods on a daily basis and in my opinion is not going about it the right way. He has cereals for breakfast, numerous cups of tea throughout the day with sweeteners instead of sugar, 4 low fat yoghurts, either chicken or hard boiled eggs and various teas in the week such as oven chips with beans. He will not try alternative foods so things like spinach will never be part of his diet but could you offer any advice at all?

Welcome to healthcare magic! He should bring down intake of teas eventhough he is using sweetener. He should increase intake of salads, vegetables and fruits. His protein intake looks to be fine. But the most important cause of Type 2 diabetes is insulin resistance means body cells do not respond properly to insulin and thus can't absorb glucose inside cells. Thus pancreas produces more insulin and thus blood sugar keeps on going high. You can reduce insulin resistance by reducing weight and giving lot of focus on physical activity. So ask him to exercise at least 5 days a week for one hour.
