Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 66 year old female living in Toronto Canada. I had several blood tests as well as a urinalysis yesterday and results came back online today. My own doctor is away right now and I am very worried. My leukocyte esterase came back at 250. This is canada so I don t know if you know what that number means here. I know in different countries different standards exist. I believe normal is 0-2. The urine culture came back negative for any significant growth. What else could this be? My father died of bladder cancer so I am very worried. I have been told that I have early stage kidney decline.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Leukocyte esterase is a screening test used to detect a substance that suggests there are white blood cells in the urine. This may mean you have a urinary tract infection. I suggest you to do an urine culture for further evaluation. It is treated with antibiotics.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
