What Do Swelling And Blisters On The Right Leg Indicate?

I am really concerned about a friend I have been taking care of. She is 87 years old, heavy, on lots of meds. but no new ones. She had a blister com up on her right leg. The doctor lanced it. But now from her knee down is so swollen and bright red. I am wondering if we should have her admitted if they will. They told her at the emergence last night that if she is not careful she could lose that leg. She has congestive heart failure and copd. She has developed a real bad cough, that she did not have. I am very worried about her.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.

You are right to be concerned about your friend.
It seems to me that she has developed cellulitis. This is a life threatening infection, especially with her back ground.. bed ridden, age, congestive heart failure and copd.
She could be in sepsis ( infection spread to her blood).

I recommend:
- hospital admission
- blood tests ( blood cultures x 2, complete blood count, arterial blood gas levels, kidney and renal function r\tests, blood sugar levels, lipid profile)
- intravenous antibiotic therapy.
- wound/pus culture
- chest x-ray
- electrocardiogram and echocardiogram
- ultrasound abdomen
- doppler study of the legs, if possible.

don't delay . please take her to the hospital right away.
Hope this helps.
Wish you both good health
