What Do Swelling In Hand And Vertigo In Diabetic Person Indicate?
My 60 year old father who has juvenile diabetes which is very well managed, overall good physical fitness, not overweight, and no other health problems had some random swelling of his right hand and both ankles while on vacation. This past weekend he had severe vertigo for a couple of days and had to stay in bed. What could these symptomes mean?
Vertigo is most commonly due to inner ear conditions such as BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo) , meniere's disease and vestibular neuronitis.
BPPV - the vertigo lasts for a few seconds to minutes, associated with certain head positions. Treated with very short course of medications and performing particular maneuvers.
Menieres- episodes lasts for a few minute to hours, associated with hearing loss and tinnitus Treated with low salt diet and in some cases, diuretics
Vestibular neuronitis- episodes lasts for hours Treated with a short course of medication and monitoring.
His doctor can assess him to determine the likely cause and then initiate treatment.
I hope this helps
