I am 36 years old female. My father is a type-II diabetic. I have got my fasting and PP blood glucose checked around 2 times during this years and it has always been fasting (around 9 hours) between 130-140 mg/dl and PP around 100-110 mg./dl. For the PP blood glucose testing I took normal lunch with some rice curry and dal soup. My query is what is the reason for fasting glucose level to be more than PP glucose level?
this should not happen . there has been some mistake . fasting blood sugar is always less than post prandial or after meal sugar. i would suggest you to get a repeat test. to be in safest zone fasting sugar should be 100 if its between 100 to 130 diet ,excercise and weight loss can normalise the sugar .
Welcome to HCM, Since your fasting blood sugar is taken before eating a meal and your postprandial blood sugar is taken after the meal, your fasting level should be lower than your postprandial level. But if the numbers are reversed and your fasting blood sugar levels are higher than your postprandial levels, it could indicate a health problem.
Knowing your medications/timing of and overall eating patterns might help determine why the pp goes down. However it is the fasting glucose that is considered more of a risk.
There are diurnal shifts in hormones like glucagon that can affect fasting glucose levels, but still two fasting values above 125 is still diagnostic of having diabetes.
Do not worry too much but keep track of your food and glucose levels to discuss with your doctor at next visit. Sincerely, Kathy Shattler, MS,RDN
