Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Divakara's Response
HI
Thanks for posting your query .
XL means Extended Release . Most of the medications have effect from 2-8 hours so they will be prescribed for 3-4 times a day. But by making a medicine XL ( Extended Release ) the medicine will release its content slowly and continuously throughout the day so that it can be taken only once or twice a day .
Also since the medicine is released slowly it can be easily tolerated by the body and side effects will be less .
Hope this answers your query .
Any clarifications feel free to ask . Happy to answer.
