What Does A Lump On The Knee Indicate?

I have a hard lump on the side of my knee that I had surgically removed 6 months ago and within that time it is back and now bigger than before! It is so painful it will wake me up at night! My foot falls asleep and my knee will buckle on me while walking! What can this be?
