What Does A Lump On The Right Knee Indicate?

I have developed a hard bump on the right side of my right knee in the past 3 weeks or so. It's at the top of the tibia and just a little larger than a quarter. Today, for the first time, there is a little bit of pain with it. your thoughts would be appreciated.
