Hello,
Tonsillar enlargement is commonly seen in pediatric age group.Theories behind these enlargement proposed are as a part of development of immune system,to counteract infections caused by viruses and bacteria. When children enter adolescence the growth of tonsils are found to gradually stop and size can decrease further. As long as there is there is no recurrent infections/painul swallowing/difficulty in breathing enlarged tonsils can be watched.A growth in tonsil one sided could be a tonsillar cyst which when present can cause foreign body sensation, difficulty in swallowing.A consultation with ent is recommended to allay anxiety.
Thank you.
