I am breastfeeding and noticed a bump on my areola that is sore and tender to the touch very painful when my LO is eating. It has been there a month now I ve tried lanolin cream, switching positions when feeding, using the pump etc. nothing seems to help. From what I have read it sounds like a blocked Montgomery gland...any suggestions?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, I understand your concern. Yes, the swelling you have on areola is a cyst of Montgomery gland. The cyst seems to be infected ,giving you pain. It needs antibiotic like Erythromycin 500 mg with non steroidal anti inflammatory drug like Ibuprofen 400 mg ( both to be taken twice a day after food) for 5-7 days, along with B complex pills, Usually it subsides with the oral antibiotics,Non responding patients need surgical drainage. Thanks.
