Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I WILL BE 99 IN JULY AND I HAVE TAKEN MELOXICOM FOR TWO MONTHS--MY STOOLS BECAME TARRY BLACK RATHER QUICKLY BUT THOUGHT WAS O.K. BUT AT THE END OF THE SECOND MONTHS ONE MORNING HAVING A STOOL REACTION WAS LOTS OF RED BLOOD AND I HAVE GOTTEN OFF OF IT IMMEDIATELY B UT STOOLS ARE S STILL TARRY BLACK BUT NOT AS MUCH---IS MY LIFE IN DANGER\\ THANKS FOR ANY INFO
Hi... Tarry black stools usually suggest bleeding in the upper part of the gastrointestinal(GI) tract whereas red coloured blood is from the lower part of the GI tract. Your history thus suggests that you have probably been bleeding from your GI tract for the past 2 months. The drug you have mentioned is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug which may cause GI tract bleeding as a side-effect. I suggest you stop the drug and observe if there is change in your stool colour. If there is no change, consult a gastoenterologist.
